something to say
This mural design is a tribute to the Human Policy Press, an independent press started by the Center on Human Policy at Syracuse University in 1974, to promote positive attitudes towards people with disabilities.
I combined the press’s powerful quote with some questioning eyes that are a spin on those of Dr. TJ Eckleburg’s in The Great Gatsby. I wanted the painting to make people think deeper about whose experiences we value and whose we cast aside.
The original eye illustration was from the 1919 book War Surgery of the Face: A Treatise on Plastic Restoration after Facial Injury by Dr. John B. Roberts. I manipulated the eyes and eyebrows to get to the final look.
